UPDATE: MAPLEWOOD, NJ – The court appearance of officials from the Jersey Animal Coalition has been postponed until Tuesday, April 22.

Officials from the JAC were scheduled to appear in South Orange-Maplewood Municipal Court at 3 p.m. today on nearly four-dozen health code violations found during a recent inspection.

The joint inspection by the village and state Departments of Health on March 12 found 45 infractions ranging from improper placement of cleaning materials to failure to provide sick animals with basic veterinary care. The South Orange shelter was given an unsatisfactory rating and remains closed.

The JAC operates the shelter in South Orange under a lease agreement with the village. It serves as the intake selter for animal control in South Orange and Maplewood.

Ruth Perlmutter, president of the nonprofit board of the JAC, did not return several calls requesting comment. In a letter posted on the JAC website, she wrote: "Please know this….as the Jersey Animal Coalition President, neither I nor the board have no intention of dealing with these important issues through the press or by responding to false and slanderous internet postings and rumors. The Jersey Animal Coalition, through counsel, has denied all the charges against it, and will wage that battle in the appropriate forum – in court."

The Municipal Court is located at 1618 Springfield Ave., Maplewood.

More information on the JAC's court appearance can be found here.
