As part of SOPAC’s “IN THE LOFT” series of jazz, blues and theater performances in the casual, club café atmosphere of the SOPAC Loft. 

 

 

 

Mike Lee can be heard frequently with the Village Vanguard Orchestra (formerly the Thad Jones/ Mel Lewis Orchestra), the Maria Schneider Orchestra and the Bill Mobley Big Band with which he recently performed and recorded alongside acclaimed pianists James Williams, Harold Mabern and Mulgrew Miller. He has appeared around town with small groups which include New York musicians such as guitarists John Hart and Ron Affif, trumpeter Dave Douglas, bassist Ron McClure and drummer Elliot Zigmund. Two of Mike's compositions were selected among the top five in the 1997 Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz and BMI International Jazz Composers Competition. He was a member of Joe Lovano's Celebrating Sinatra touring ensemble.  Currently, Mike lives in the New York City area, tours extensively with his own bands and maintains a busy schedule of clinics and guest artist appearances for university jazz programs. Recent festival appearances have included performances with Benny Green, Marian McPartland, Matt Wilson and John Hart.

Through Ms. Forché’s spoken word and the performance of Shostakovich’s 2nd, 3rd, and 8th string quartets by the highly acclaimed Alexander String Quartet, we discover the awesome power and exquisite beauty that is born through the deeply personal expression of rebellion.

Join Midtown Direct Rep (MDR) in developing new and innovative American theatre.  Following on the heels of MDR's successful development of Rated P (for parenthood), a new program, “Midtown Direct Rep in the Loft,” aims to do the same for other previously unseen material.

 

MDR will be presenting monthly readings or workshops of new plays and musicals one Sunday night a month at 7PM in the SOPAC loft. With a cash bar and post show discussions with our casts and creative teams, MDR will foster a fun and collaborative environment to nurture the development of top notch theatre right here at home.

 

The series kicks off on Sunday, November 11th with By and By by Lauren Grunderson.

“Straight up, low down, burning and churning: Zero to Soul in 10 seconds.” Vocalist Shari Pine enriches audiences with her modern take on Blues. As a child Pine had always surrounded herself with music, if she wasn't flipping through her mother’s old records, she was constantly turning the radio dial. She began her formal training in classical guitar and then continued in vocals. Today she draws inspiration from artist from Barbara Streisand to Eddie Vedder and styles from R&B to classic rock. Weaving the vocal styles of R&B, Gospel and American Roots, Pine places herself at the crossroads of Blues. Even though she is firmly anchored in traditional blues, one foot is stepping into the future. Shari Pine performs at a large variety of venues from B.B. Kings in New York to local venues such as Hat City Kitchen, Maplewoodstock, and now at SOPAC’s In the Loft series.

E.A. Hoffmann’s fairy tale, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, first premiered in 1892. New York Theatre Ballet’s production is the only hour-long Nutcracker presented by a professional troupe in the metro area. Praised for her "luminous voice" and "intensely expressive interpretations" (The New York Times) the twenty-three year old vocalist is quickly emerging as a sought-after operatic and concert artist. In this evening’s performance, we delight in Mr. Goode’s profound artistry and catch a rising star. Featuring solo piano works and songs by Mozart, Schubert, Brahms and Mahler.

Featuring Grammy nominated jazz singer Carla Cook, The Juilliard Jazz Ensemble returns to SOPAC for their popular holiday concert. The Jazz Ensemble consists of promising young Juilliard artists taught by today's most active, innovative, and respected jazz musicians. The sextet will perform pieces putting their own inventive spin on holiday classics and favorites. 

 

 

 

The Juilliard Jazz Orchestra and the division’s small ensembles play more than 50 performances annually including appearances at the Detroit Jazz Festival and New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, and tour to destinations such as Costa Rica, Colombia, Japan, Spain, and Brazil. The ensembles perform regularly at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola and the world-renowned Blue Note in New York City. For the past several seasons they also have enjoyed week-long runs at Jazz at Lincoln Center with guest artists such as Kenny Barron, Lew Tabackin, Gerald Wilson, Bobby Watson, Ernie Andrews, Tom Harrell and Sean Jones.

Youth Orchestras of Essex County is the longest-operating youth orchestra in New Jersey formed in 1956. We are three orchestras, five ensembles, more than 100 musicians from a dozen towns, led by eight outstanding conductors and coaches, making beautiful classical music. The orchestras aim to provide a diverse group of musically talented young people the opportunity to participate in an affordable, high-level orchestra experience and cultivate a lifelong love of music. Musicians (ages 8 to 18) can participate in four different groups: the Essex County Symphony Orchestra, the Junior Symphony Orchestra, Overture Strings and Chamber Ensembles.

Jessica has premiered music written by Ricky Ian Gordon, Adam Guettel, Jason Robert Brown, Michael John LaChiusa, Stephen Sondheim and John Bucchino. She has written songs for almost a dozen recordings including “Greed”, part of a commission for Audra McDonald’s Seven Deadly Sins at Carnegie Hall and Ms. McDonald’s CD Cradle and All.  Along with her husband John Pizzarelli, Jessica hosts a weekly national radio program called Radio Deluxe.

John Waters’ one-man show This Filthy World celebrates the film career and obsessive tastes of the man William Burroughs once called "The Pope of Trash". John Waters is famed for his trash epics (Pink Flamingos, Polyester, Serial Mom, A Dirty Shame), as well as his commercial films that have been adapted for the stage (Hairspray, winner of eight Tony Awards and Cry Baby - The Musical nominated for four Tony Awards). This Filthy World focuses on Waters’ early negative artistic influences, his fascination with true crime, exploitation films, fashion lunacy, the extremes of the art world, Catholicism, sexual deviancy and a love of reading.

As the host of NPR’s From the Top, O’Riley works and performs with the next generation of brilliant musicians. The music flows seamlessly from one genre to another, from the familiar to the fresh. His latest recording Out Of My Hands, includes the music of R.E.M., Portishead, Cocteau Twins, Pink Floyd, Nirvana, the Bad Plus, the Smiths, Tears for Fears as well as material from Radiohead and Elliott Smith.

With parents deeply rooted in the music world, it’s no shock that Vivian Sessoms has had an amazing musical career. Raised in Harlem by a jingle singer/songwriter mother and a flutist/ percussionist father (who played with James Brown), Sessoms was singing by the time she could talk. At the age of nine she began doing television and radio voice-overs, while auditioning for Broadway plays and classically training her voice. By the time she was 16, Sessoms started to compose her own songs and her career took off.  Her musical growth led to performances with P. Diddy, Donna Summer, Natalie Cole and Chaka Khan, and recordings with Michael Jackson and Gavin Degraw. Recently Sessoms paired up with Chris Parks, guitar/ bass player turned producer, releasing “Sunny One Day.” “Sunny One Day,” an album of unique soul and jazz, took three years to create but follows her motto of “believing in or feeling something about what you’re sing.”

As part of SOPAC’s “IN THE LOFT” series of jazz, blues and theater performances in the casual, club café atmosphere of the SOPAC Loft.  Consisting of Bill McClellan on drums, Mike Griot on bass, David Barnes on harmonica and Michael Hill on guitar and vocals, Michael Hill’s Blue Mob has made a name for themselves in the world of Blues. Michael Hill’s Blues Mob demonstrates the passion, desire for freedom, humor and justice that are fundamental to the Blues with their lyrics equip with instrumental blues seasoned with rock, R&B, funk and more.

 

Their 1994 debut album, “Bloodlines,” was awarded Best Debut Album of the Year by Living Blues. Since then, the Michael Hill’s Blues Mob has obtained critical acclaim from audiences worldwide. In 2011, Michael Hill was inducted in the New York Blues Hall of Fame as a Master Blues Artist. This past August the Mob released “Goddesses & Gold Redux” and this past September they performed at the South Orange Blues Festival.

The Harlem Gospel Choir has traveled the world for 26 years sharing its joy of faith while fundraising for children's charities. Founded in 1986 by Allen Bailey, the Choir presents the finest singers and musicians from black churches in Harlem and the New York City area. The theme of every performance is "bringing people and nations together, and give something back". The Choir has performed alongside superstars including Andre Rieu, Diana Ross, Bono, The Chieftains, Simple Minds, Live, Sinead O'Connor, Kim Wilde, Lyle Lovett, Josh Groban, Lisa Marie Presley and the Gorillaz. The Harlem Gospel Choir has also had solo performances for Royalty, President Obama, Nelson Mandela, Popes, Elton John, the Michael Jackson memorial and now SOPAC.

Presented by the Youth Orchestras of Essex County and SOPAC. The groundbreaking trio, Time For Three, transcends traditional classification, with elements of classical, country western, gypsy and jazz idioms forming a blend all its own. The members—Zach De Pue, violin; Nick Kendall, violin; and Ranaan Meyer, double bass—carry a passion for improvisation, composition, and arrangements, all prime elements of the ensemble’s playing.

His distinguished career includes leading a 17-piece swing band that accompanied singer Josephine Baker, performing with the Count Basie Orchestra for 11 years, and recording with Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Tony Bennet and Lou Rawls. As one critic notes, when it comes to swing, "Guys like Wess don't talk about it. They just do it. And just get better at it."

Celebrating their 20th Anniversary in 2009, New York Voices is the Grammy Award winning vocal ensemble renowned for their excellence in jazz and the art of group singing. While their interests are rooted in jazz, Brazilian, R and B, classical, and pop influences often are infused with equal creativity and authenticity.

 

Founded in 1987 by Darmon Meader at Ithaca College in NY, New York Voices originally was part of an invitational alumni group formed to tour the European Jazz Festivals in the summer of '86. As a result of this exciting experience, the idea of forming a professional ensemble was born. In 1989 the singers signed their first record contract with GRP Records and released a self-titled debut album, New York Voices. The ensemble received rave notices and quickly received domestic and international recognition in the Jazz World.

Evan Sherman is currently a student at Millburn High School in New Jersey. He has played at many clubs in the New York Metro area including Smalls, Fat Cat, Jules, Puppet’s, Trumpets, Shanghai Jazz, Cecil’s and other venues. For 4 years, Evan performed at the Jazz Standard every Sunday with the Jazz Standard Youth Orchestra. He continues to lead a trio at Samurai Sushi in New Jersey every Saturday for over 2 years.  Growing up in the New York area has made it possible to play with many top jazz musicians including: Kenny Burrell, Abraham Burton, Roy Hargrove, Hubert Laws, John Lee, James Moody, Tim Ries, Dave Stryker, Julius Tolentino, Mark Whitfield, Steve Wilson and many others. Evan has studied with many esteemed jazz artists in the New York area and is currently studying with drummers, Neal Smith and Willie Jones III.

Having graced the halls of the Concertgebouw of Amsterdam, the Philharmonie of Berlin and the Théatre des Champs-Elysées of Paris, the Salzburg Chamber Soloists performs orchestral music with the freedom of soloists. Praised for their Mozart interpretations, the group brings us this all-Mozart program of the Requiem, the Divertimento KV 136 in D Major, and Eine Kleine Nachtmusik under the direction of Lavard Skou-Larsen.

Based in New York City, the Allant Trio is comprised of three musicians from The Juilliard School, Alina Lim, cello, Beth Nam, piano, and Anna Park, violin. Coached by faculty members Nicholas Mann and Rohan DeSilva these three artists came together at Juilliard in the Fall of 2010, under the guidance of Vivian Weilerstein. With extensive individual careers in chamber music, they have already made their mark, with notable performances and significant commitment to community engagement. The trio seeks to share their passion for music with a broad audience.

 

 

 

In their inaugural season, they have performed at various venues such as Juilliard’s recital halls, Rolston Recital Hall in Banff, the James Lenox House for seniors, and the Bailey House, a facility that provides housing and support services to homeless men, women, and children living with HIV/AIDS in New York City. This summer, the trio was invited to participate in the distinguished Chamber Music Residency Program at the Banff Centre. Recently, they were one of five semi-finalists at the Trondheim International Chamber Music Competition 2011 in Norway. This season, they have performed at the American Irish Historical Society, Hewlett-Woodmere and Ossining libraries, as well as the St. Paul's Chapel at the Columbia University.

Presented by Seton Hall Arts Council.  Looking forward to its fourth performance on the Jazz ‘n the Hall series at SOPAC, the Seton Hall University Faculty Jazz Ensemble has become widely recognized, appreciated, and congratulated by the University and the general public for its energetic, entertaining and educational jazz performances.

 

As performing artists-teachers, the Ensemble members collaborate to present an exciting program of jazz music, accompanied by spoken commentary, which always reflects the historic stylistic spectrum of the development of jazz from its traditional New Orleans folk roots to its sophisticated, popular presence in the world today.

She has sung on hundreds of commercials, "mmmgood, Campbell's Soup", "Winston Tastes Good", Michelob Beer, to name a few. Marlene has been a featured artist on The Today Show, The Morning Show, profiled by Charles Kuralt, Carnegie Hall with The Kool Jazz Festival, Entertainment Tonight and so many more. She performs all over the world, highlighting her tours with a month every March in the UK, where she sold out the oldest, most famous club there, Ronnie Scott's.

A concert of piano trio gems made possible through the generosity of Angelo Rancatti.  In the meeting of three acclaimed artists: pianist Reiko Aizawa, “A pianist of extraordinary refinement and vitality” (Cleveland Plain Dealer); violinist Jesse Mills (two-time Grammy nominee); and cellist Raman Ramakrishnan, “Understatedly elegant and smooth” (Boston Globe) we have the newly formed Horszowski Trio. This program brings us the return of two artists to the series (Mr. Ramakrishnan from the Daedalus Quartet and Mr. Mills, guest artist in last season’s performance of the Fauré piano quartet) in trios by Antonín Dvořák, Gabriel Fauré, and Haydn’s “Gypsy Rondo.”

Created and performed by Tim Watts, who employs a unique blend of mime, puppetry, live and recorded music, and animation to present an exploration of the next and oldest frontier: the deep blue sea.

Youth Orchestras of Essex County is the longest-operating youth orchestra in New Jersey formed in 1956. We are three orchestras, five ensembles, more than 100 musicians from a dozen towns, led by eight outstanding conductors and coaches, making beautiful classical music. The orchestras aim to provide a diverse group of musically talented young people the opportunity to participate in an affordable, high-level orchestra experience and cultivate a lifelong love of music. Musicians (ages 8 to 18) can participate in four different groups: the Essex County Symphony Orchestra, the Junior Symphony Orchestra, Overture Strings and Chamber Ensembles.
