WARREN, NJ - Somerset County, NJ, has a lot going for it. It’s not only been named one of the best places in the U.S. to live; another ranking has it as one of the happiest too.
"Each morning when I open my eyes I say to myself: I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn't arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I'm going to be happy in it." Groucho Marx
At about the same time that Movoto.com’s real estate blog was proclaiming Somerset the fifth best county in the nation, the National Bureau of Economic Research cited the Middlesex-Somerset-Hunterdon region as No. 10 in its Top 10 list of happiest metro areas.
Somerset County was ranked 5th best in the US.
And New Jersey schools are #1 in the US.
“We have many things to be thankful for here in Somerset County, and I think our quality of life has a definite impact on residents’ happiness,” said Freeholder Director Patrick Scaglione. “Our educational institutions, government services, recreation areas, employment opportunities and housing options are among the best anywhere.”
The 10 happiest metro areas with populations over 1 million as of 2010 were identified by the private, nonprofit research organization as Richmond-Petersburg, VA; Norfolk-Virginia Beach-Newport News, VA; Washington, DC; Raleigh-Durham, NC; Atlanta, GA; Houston, TX; Jacksonville, FL; Nashville, TN; West Palm Beach-Boca Raton, FL; and Middlesex-Somerset-Hunterdon, NJ.
