SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – A final decision on re-opening schools in South Orange and Maplewood on Monday will be made after officials receive updated information about power outages and conditions of streets, according to the school district’s website.

“Currently, power outages and hazardous conditions prevent schools from opening,” according to information posted on the website Thursday. “Several schools are without power, downed power lines pose a danger to children getting to school, and traffic patterns are compromised by fallen trees and nonfunctioning lights.”

Once schools re-open next week, all schools will have full class days. The elementary school parent-teacher conferences originally planned for Nov. 5 will be rescheduled. The staff development day scheduled for Tuesday has been canceled. In addition, the New Jersey Education Association has canceled its annual convention, so school will be in session all day on Thursday and Friday.
