Social Networking Mistakes to Avoid

Posting content on social networking sites is an easy, efficient, and effective way to boost your company’s marketing and PR strategies. Because sites like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn are free, it’s a cost effect and powerful marketing tool.  However, if they are used the wrong way, they can have a negative impact on your business.  By posting something potentially offensive or focusing strictly on yourself, you may be sending your followers packing without even realizing it.  Below are a few social media mistakes you should avoid.

1. Not having a plan.  Any business can join social networks; however it is a matter of what you make of it.  Once you get started, it is important to have a clear outline of your goals and how these social media platforms will tie into your marketing or customer strategies.

2. Only talking about your business or products.  Yes, your social media should be used to promote your business, products and services, but you should not focus strictly on that.  Take the time to share articles and events that may be of interest to your followers.  This is a great way to share with your followers things of interest to you beyond your business scope.

3. Not having a bio.  On most social media sites, your company’s bio is the first thing someone sees.  Take this opportunity to be creative and let viewers know what your company does, as well as your location and website URL.  If they do not know who you are or what you do, give them a good reason to dig a little deeper.  Be sure to tell them how to reach you. 

4. Failure to engage.  All social media platforms are about interacting with your friends and followers.  Be engaged and interactive with your followers, respond to questions, and provide feedback when necessary. 

5. Posting infrequently.  If you only post once a week, don’t expect to gain new followers left and right.  Take the time to post content related to your company, relevant articles, and events four to five times a week.  This will keep you engaged with followers and also show that you are active on your social media sites.

While utilizing sites like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn may seem like a fool-proof marketing tool, there are dos and don’ts that are important to consider.  As you begin utilizing social networks, have a set agenda that you want to follow with goals and objectives in mind.  With the right plan, these sites will help increase your customer awareness and marketing strategies.
