LIVINGSTON, NJ – Sobel & Co., interns have worked this summer to contribute relief to Sandy victims at the Jersey shore.

Every year, Livingston based accounting firm, Sobel & Co., chooses a philanthropic cause for their in service day.  This year, the team decided to do their part to help for the victims of super storm Sandy.

Molly Lockwood, Director of Human Resources at Sobel & Co., organizes Sobel’s in service days.  “Each year Sobel & Co. tasks our summer interns with identifying a nonprofit project for the firm and coordinating the fund raising and community involvement aspects for our annual In-Service Day. This year they chose to work with Jersey Cares, a nonprofit that is facilitating a range of activities across the state, especially along the shore.”

Lockwood said that she has worked with the Sobel interns to organize fundraising events such as a barbecue and car wash to meet the goal of $5,000 they committed to raise for Jersey Cares.

Not only did the team exceed their initial goal by $1,000, Lockwood, her interns and the entire Sobel staff spent their in service day out in the field at Sea Bright to help victims physically clean up along the beach area.

“The residents have been clamoring for someone to help them shovel and sweep away debris and sand left by the hurricane so that they could reclaim their walk way,” said Lockwood.  “As the 90+ staff and partners from Sobel & Co. worked on this throughout the day, neighbors, bikers, mom with strollers, dog walkers and town representatives all came by to thank us for our help. Cars passing by honked their support while one resident baked us chocolate cookies.”

“I’ve never been apart of a fundraiser before,” said Justin Desousa, one of four summer interns. “We’ve all worked together as a team and have been working really hard to raise money.  It’s been a great experience to do these little events and to see how they turn out.”

Desousa is a senior Accounting Major at The College of New Jersey.  “I love this (internship) so far.  Everyone at Sobel has been so helpful and we’ve been learning to work together in a team.”

In addition to executing a successful fundraising campaign this summer, the Sobel interns were also given the opportunity to venture into the field by visiting clients with senior partners. “When you’re in the classroom it’s just you by yourself,” said Desousa. “It has been helpful to be able to ask questions on these projects and to be hands on.”

“We were honored by the opportunity to make a difference, and while aspirins for sore backs and arms were essential, the pride we felt was far greater than the pain,” said Lockwood. “I am confident that we got as much, or more, out of the day than the families from Sea Bright.”
