Sobel & Co. Annual In-Service Day

Wednesday, August 20, 2014 • 7:48pm

LIVINGSTON, NJ - On Wednesday Aug. 6, the staff and partners at Sobel & Co. participated in our annual In-Service Day.  Working with Alan Sobel, Managing Partner, Molly Lockwood, Director of Human Resources and Sally Glick, Chief Growth Strategist, the firm’s four summer interns, Tyler Callahan, Michael Coviello, Megan Muller and Jodie Lichtenstein managed this project just as their predecessors have in previous years.

We are proud of our In-Service Day, and we believe it is unique because it consists of a combination of both fundraising and significant volunteer time.  We spend the summer months involved in a wide range of philanthropic activities, culminating in a day of community service assisting a nonprofit organization based on their needs.

To begin with, it is the interns’ responsibility to select one of the firm’s nonprofit clients as the recipient of our charitable efforts and our volunteer time.   In the past we have helped organizations such as Habitat for Humanity (Paterson), Cerebral Palsy League, Children’s Aid and Family Services, the town of Seabright through Jersey Cares and other valuable organizations whose mission is to help our most vulnerable communities.

This year Catholic Charities of Newark was selected to receive cash donations along with lightly used clothing and household items that were gathered to complement our day of volunteerism.

Throughout the summer, the interns led a three month fund-raising exercise that resulted in a total cash donation in excess of $5,000! Some of the initiatives they created included a bake sale, car vacuuming, a breakfast bagel sale, auctioning an intern-for-a-day, Paint the Partner and more. Prior years’ fundraisers have included Get Out of Jail Day, Dunk-a-Partner, Bowling Pin for a Day, a car wash and a BBQ. Each year the interns use their ingenuity and imagination to keep the employees engaged and enthusiastic as we work to reach our goal. This year was no exception!

The fundraising aspect is important, but the real key to the success of this annual event is the camaraderie and companionship that develops as a result of spending the day together on site,  being involved in the community and making an impact on those who need our help most.

Once we arrived at the Catholic Charities facilities, we were divided into teams assigned to various tasks such as yard work (including mowing, weeding and hedge trimming), inside and outside painting, window cleaning and grounds clean-up at their Cranford locations on Alden Street and South Street.

As anyone who has engaged in manual labor will attest, it was a long day for us all. But it was also a rewarding day, one filled with a sense of satisfaction, gratification, accomplishment and good will that more than outweighed the annoyance of getting paint in our hair, blisters on our fingers and aching backs!

Sobel & Co. is a firm that adheres to its core values, one of which is “Caring about Our People and Our Community.”  As such, it is only fitting that the partners have made the decision to close the office for one day - every year - in early August to invest our time and our resources to reinforce this commitment.  It defines our firm,  our culture and our people.
