SPARTA, NJ- There was an unwanted visitor to the Sparta Community Garden earlier this week.  It appears that gardeners are not the only ones who find it an attractive place to spend time.  A snapping turtle decided to come in and lay her eggs in the soft ground.  While she did not seem to have eaten anything, she “made quite a mess,” according to community gardener Renee Ferguson.

Sisters Denise Sivulich and Ferguson were in the garden at the time the mother-to-be was discovered.  Animal control was called to remove the large snapping turtle.

Ferguson said, “Thanks to the Animal Control officer, Don since there's no way I'd touch this critter.”

Having examined the perimeter fence they found no indication that she had come in any other way than through the open gate.  Two legged visitors are reminded to close the gate even while they are inside the garden.
