Skin Deep Salon and Spa: Where Giving Back to the Community is a Way of Life

NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ – For Susan Barbaglia, owner of Skin Deep Salon and Spa in New Providence, giving back to the community is not a catchphrase; it’s a way of life. Whether it is collecting and donating over 300 holiday gifts to the O’Neil Center in Paterson to distribute to children infected with HIV or raising $37,000 to fight pediatric cancer through Skin Deep Spa’s signature charitable event, A Night for Julien, or providing Christmas gifts for Christmas is for Children, a clinic in Morristown that cares for underprivileged children and their families, Skin Deep Salon and Spa is a leader in community giving. Skin Deep’s giving does not stop there – the Spa makes donations to many charitable causes, as well, including St. Hubert’s, the Great Swamp, the New Providence Education Foundation, and many others.
“Having a successful business, you have to give back to the community. There’s power here with people walking in and out of our doors,” said Barbaglia. “It’s up to me to help spread the word that charitable giving is needed. It can’t be out of sight, out of mind. We need to enlighten them that all of us together can help,” she continued.
“As a group, we are much stronger than an individual person. And I believe what goes around comes around. It’s good Karma,” Barbaglia added.
She told The Alternative Press that thanks to money raised for A Night for Julien, a light therapy machine was purchased for pediatric cancer patients and that Julien, the local boy stricken with cancer, is responding to the treatment. “That makes it worth it,” she said. “Making a child’s life better – that’s what it’s all about,” Barbaglia added.
“It’s good to be able to give back. It’s more thrilling than anything else I do. I enjoy spreading the positive Karma to others,” she continued.
Barbaglia’s ability to give back to the community in such a prolific way is the direct result of her successful business on Springfield Avenue in New Providence, which will celebrate its 17thanniversary in September. Skin Deep Salon and Spa has expanded twice at its present location, increasing from 1,000 square feet to over 3,000. Barbaglia began her business in Chatham, where she only handled skin care. She then moved to New Providence and did business there for five years before becoming a full service salon and moving to Millburn, for one year. She then returned to New Providence and has been there ever since.
Skin Deep Salon and Spa offers “everything from head to toe” including massage, manicures, pedicures, facials, hair cutting/styling, hair coloring, hair straightening and everything in between. Massages available include the popular hot stone massage. Manicures are thirty minutes while pedicures are an hour. Facials, which are non-aggressive and gentle, take anywhere from an hour and fifteen minutes to an hour and a half. European hair coloring is available as is ammonia-free hair coloring, as well as Keratin treatments.
Skin Deep has 30 employees, many of whom have been there for a long time. The staff participates in ongoing education and classes. They are well-trained and well-educated. “They’re very seasoned technicians,” Barbaglia said.
There are three upcoming holiday shopping parties, two for men, one for women. Men’s Shopping Parties will take place on December 15 and 22, at which men will enjoy special discounts on products and other promotions. A Women’s Shopping Party will take place on December 16th.
Skin Deep also offers birthday parties for adults that include wine and cheese as well an education program and treatments as well as beauty retreats that include a one hour class, a treatment, and samples.
Regarding her experience as a business owner in New Providence and her work at Skin Deep Salon and Spa Barbaglia told The Alternative Press, “It’s been wonderful. I love it. I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I enjoy coming to work. It’s my home away from home.”
