SUMMIT, NJ – Yoga, which has ancient and far-reaching beginnings, is now one of the most popular mind-body forms of exercise, which promotes relaxation, flexibility and strength-building. On Jan.15, Eliana Moreira opened her first yoga studio, the Simply Yoga Institute in Summit, with the hopes of catering to each person’s individual needs and making their yoga experience amazing.

Moreira, who is originally from Brazil, grew up in Summit and as a young adult was highly involved in the arts and sciences. At the age of 18, she read a book entitled “Be Here Now” by Western-born yogi and spiritual teacher Ram Dass, about spirituality, yoga and meditation. The book inspired her to take her first yoga class, which she called a “life-changing experience.”

“The first yoga class I ever took, I fell in love with it,” Moreira said.

She learned the different styles of yoga and taught in studios throughout New Jersey and New York City for the past six years.  However, she felt she wasn’t able to teach specifically what she wanted. What interested her most was alignment, which deals with aligning the mind with the different parts of the body and what they actually do when a body is in a certain position. While some people come to her with arthritis, diabetes, or back pain, and others are pre- and post-natal, she is able to help each person, sometimes with the use of props, because with yoga there are no limitations, she said.

She really needed her own space, so a few years ago, she began looking for a location for a studio and she found one in downtown Summit. Over the years, she has gained knowledge and insight into the various types of yoga and today feels confident about her ability to help people.

All the instructors at the Simply Yoga Institute have different backgrounds, but are all qualified in different aspects of yoga. They offer gentle, basic, alignment, Vinyasa (or flow) and pre- and post-natal classes.

“Yoga is for everyone and that’s what this place is really about,” Moreira said.

Moreira said the reaction in the community has been fabulous and she is very excited for the future.

“Yoga is not a religion or sport, it’s an art and a science,” she said.

Simply Yoga Insititute is located at 428 Springfield Avenue. For more information, call 908-249-2028, or visit their website at www.simplyoga.net.
