During Sickle Cell Awareness Month in September, the Sickle Cell team from the Valerie Fund Children Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children’s Hospital of New Jersey (CHoNJ), located at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center (NBIMC), is hosting a series of events to assist children, adolescents and young adults with sickle cell disease.

Sickle Cell disease affects between 70,000 and 100,000 people in the United States and one out of every 500 African American babies. NBIMC treats more sickle cell anemia patients than any other hospital in New Jersey, from the very young to patients in their seventies. One of the hallmarks of the program’s success is the comprehensive transition of patients from pediatric care to adult care at the same facility.
