Shoplifiting Suspect's Purse Leads to Arrest in South Orange

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ – (A weekly roundup of SOPD activity) A 61-year-old South Orange resident was arrested and charged with stealing from the Eden Gourmet market on South Orange Avenue.
Jonelle Bonita, 61, of South Orange. was arrested at 2 p.m. on March 5 and charged with stealing from the store the day before. The manager told police that someone had come into Eden Gourmet and placed items into her pocketbook. When Bonita was confronted she ran out of the store and left her pocketbook and the stolen items behind.
Bonita also had outstanding warrants issued for her arrest out of Springfield.

Police arrested Martin Hernandez, 50, of Paterson, on Feb. 27, and charged him with stealing a student’s cell phone while at the South Orange Middle School.

Two people had items from their cars stolen. The manager at Lilly’s Limo Service, Valley Street, said that someone removed four hub caps from her 2007 Yukon. The incident occurred between 7 p.m. March 5 and March 6. A Ridgewood Road resident said that someone had entered his car and removed the owner’s manual, registration and insurance papers, a credit card and a GPS unit. The incident occurred in the late-night hours of March 3.

A witness told police that at midnight on March 6 he saw someone attempting to break into a vehicle which was located in a dealership parking lot on Valley Street. The person had damaged the driver’s side door handle to the vehicle and removed the lug nuts to the wheels in an attempt to steal them.

An Irving Avenue resident told police that he had hired a carpet cleaning company and realized that after they had completed their job his Mac Book Air Laptop was missing. The incident occurred March 3.

A 15-year-old was assaulted when he was walking from school on Valley Street. The victim said that he was punched several times in the back. The incident occurred at 4 p.m. on March 7. A juvenile suspect was taken into custody.
- A South Orange resident, Panel Dalce, 40, was arrested after an officer discovered that the car the South Orange resident had been driving was reportedly stolen from a car rental company. The incident occurred on Hamilton Road at 2:15 a.m. on March 7.
