PATERSON, NJ – City detectives investigating a shooting on the Lafayette Street bridge early Saturday morning eventually determined that the man accidently wounded himself.

Police found who they thought was a shooting victim at the emergency room of St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center shortly after 1:30 am.

The victim told police he was walking from a girlfriend’s house located in the area of 12th Avenue and E. 22nd Street when he heard a loud noise while he was crossing the bridge and started running. He then said he felt a burning sensation in his groin area and realized he had been struck, police said.

“During the course of their investigation the detectives developed evidence that suggested that the shooting victim had indeed shot himself,’’ police said. “The victim, as a result of this discovered evidence was arrested and charged accordingly.”
