MADISON, NJ - The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey has expanded its roster of offerings for the upcoming fall semester of its Shakespeare Theatre Academy.

Popular classes from last year return along with seven new seminars designed by leading industry professionals—including an intensive two-day session devoted to performing and teaching Shakespeare.

“Whether a student is entering the world of theatre for the first time or already a seasoned performer, The Shakespeare Theatre provides learning opportunities that are both rigorous and fun for aspiring artists of all ages,” Associate Director of Education Doug West said. Classes meet once a week and offer participants the opportunity to work with The Shakespeare Theatre’s artistic and educational staff as well as guest artists from across the state.

“At our core, we are a teaching theatre, and we strive to extend that mission to the community by offering instruction in all aspects of theatrical creation, both onstage and behind the scenes,” Director of Education Brian Crowe said. This semester, Stephen Davis, professor of Theatre Arts at Centenary College, will teach a new seminar in stage makeup. Through text, character and language analysis, participants will bring some of classic theatre’s greatest characters to life.

The Shakespeare Theatre Academy will also introduce its first classes for elementary school students this fall in response to popular demand. The new Creative Dramatics class offers students in grades 1-4 a variety of workshops and theatre games. For older students, the new Teen Actors Workshop trains young artists in ensemble work and performance techniques.
