SOUTH ORANGE, NJ – Seton Hall University has entered into a contract with the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth to purchase the property on Scotland Road, which formerly was the Marylawn of the Oranges Academy.
The university plans to move its graduate medical professional programs to the location, according Dennis Garbini, Seton Halls Vice President of Administration. This would include physical therapy, occupational therapy, physician’s assistant, sports medicine and sports therapy programs, which are currently taught on the main campus.
The sale is contingent upon the ability to transfer a clean title as well as zoning approval for the continued use of the property for educational purposes. The issue is scheduled to come before the Zoning Board of Adjustment in early May. The resolution of the title issue may take a number of months, Garbini said.
The sale would include both the school buildings and the residence, which sit on two separate plots of land. Current plans call for a renovation of the house to make it useable, although what exactly the building would become has not been determined.
“The Sisters will be meeting with Montrose residents regarding their concerns about the title,” Garbini said. “We need to have clear title, so that will need to be resolved.“ He indicated that the neighbors that had been spoken to were pleased that the property would once again be returned to educational purposes and that those using it would be young medical professionals.
Renovations needed include making the buildings handicapped accessible and the repair of roof leaks.
"It's a beautiful school," Garbini said. "I remember seeing it when I first came int the community in 1968, and it really caught my eye." He noted that they would be doing extensive landscaping and other improvements after they close on the property, but that is months away.
