SOUTH ORANGE, NJ – Seton Hall University will start charging visitors for parking, according to an email sent by the university’s public safety and security department.

The lot adjacent to the front gate and the Art Center will be equipped with pay stations. Currently, visitors to the campus stop at the main gate for a free guest pass.

This way, according to the email, visitors “will contribute to the cost of our public safety and parking enhancements,” including the more than 500 spaces created with an addition to the parking deck. The expanded deck is expected to “alleviate the parking crisis that has frustrated our community,” according to the email.

Faculty, staff and students also will help pay for the enlarged parking deck through an increase in yearly parking fees. They will pay $300 for a permit, up $50 from last year. The cost of permits for part-time faculty increased by $25, from $75 to $100, New parking permits will be required beginning Sept. 1.

Paid visitor parking was adopted on the recommendation of the Parking Task Force, according to the email.

University spokeswoman Laurie Pine said she could not provide any further details on cost of parking or date of implementation until the Parking Task Force meets next week. “Things are still in process,” she said in an email.
