The First Congregational Church of Westfield continues its annual Summer Sermon Series on Sundays at 10 a.m. with a look at T-shirts as a form of religious expression.  Visitors are invited to attend the casual, air-conditioned family worship and to stay for light refreshments on the lawn following each service.

The series, titled “T-Shirt Theology,” will explore a different slogan each week from a spiritual and theological perspective.  Led by Rev. Dr. Mark Boyea, Senior Minister, the series will continue weekly through August 31.   A program of summer stories is offered for young children during the service and a crib room is available for infants and toddlers.

"Besides being cool and comfortable, T-shirts have often served as personal billboards, whether serious or humorous, for the wearer's beliefs and attitudes about life, the world, and God,” said Dr. Boyea.  “I often find myself reflecting on these sentiments, at various times moved to laughter, sadness, curiosity, inspiration, annoyance, and even anger.

“But rarely has a t-shirt saying opened the door to a real conversation about its meaning. Instead, they end up being more like ‘sound bites.’  And from a spiritual perspective, our sound bite culture does us no favors.  This summer, what better time to seriously reflect on some of those sound bites instead of just passing them by on the street.”

This is the seventh in the church’s annual summer sermon series.  Previous series have explored the world’s religions and the Bible’s “one-hit wonders,” figures that appear only once but make a lasting impact.  First Congregational Church, a member of the United Church of Christ, is located at 125 Elmer Street in Westfield.  For additional information, please contact the church office at 908-233-2494 or visit www.fccofwestfield.org.
