Scutari Introduces Bill to Legalize Marijuana in New Jersey

State senator Nicholas Scutari (D-Union) introduced legislation on Monday that, if passed, would legalize marijuana and allow New Jersey to generate tax revenue from its sales.

Scutari, who is also Linden's prosecutor, modeled the bill after a Colorado law that legalized pot. The Centennial State has collected millions in sales tax revenues since January, and Scutari believes the Garden State could do the same. The revenues, he says, would be used to fix the state’s bridges and roads and fund drug-education and treatment programs, as well as women's health programs.

Calling the war on marijuana a "failure," Scutari says that enacting the law could end the illegal drug trade and clean up neighborhoods.

Success is unlikely; Governor Chris Christie has vowed not to sign any bill legalizing marijuana for recreational use because he believes it would send the wrong message to kids.
