SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ - The Scotch Plains Public Library is launching the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program. The multi-year pre-literacy program is open to Scotch Plains and Fanwood residents under the age of 5. The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program was developed to increase awareness of the importance of reading to very young children and to help children enter school ready to learn.
The library is launching the program to encourage families to read at least 1000 books to their children between birth and age 5. Families can sign up beginning January 3, 2014 at 11:00 am at a special kickoff event. First, the Children’s Department staff will share some of their favorite stories. Then, participants will be given the opportunity to register for the program. Upon registration, each child will receive a folder with a reading log to record the books they read. Each time a goal of recording 100 books is reached, children may bring their folder to the library to receive the next reading log and a small prize. Upon completion of 1000 books, each child will receive a certificate of achievement, an invitation to the annual celebration party, and have his or her name added to the library’s Readers Hall of Fame.
