SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ - Scotch Plains-Fanwood varsity soccer player junior David Valian had a week he will not soon forget.
It started on Sunday evening in the Union County Tournament final against Elizabeth when the junior delivered a perfect cross to teammate Brian Rubin, which Rubin finished to give the Raiders the 1-0 lead. This proved to be a crucial goal, as the team scored three goals in a row after this one giving them a 4-2 victory and the county title.
He also added two assists in the team's first-round state sectional matchup versus Perth Amboy. The team went on to win the game, 9-0.
Valian’s week concluded as he scored three goals in the state sectional quarterfinal against Phillipsburg en route to a 6-0 victory. “It was the greatest feeling in the world to get the hat trick,” said Valian. “Scoring one goal is great, but to score three is just insane.”
The team really seemed to feed off the energy provided by Valian, as they won three crucial games in a row by a cumulative score of 19-2. “It was the best week of soccer we played all year,” said Valian. “Everyone was working hard at practice, and it was just a great week for the team.”
However, Valian and the team were unable to carry over the momentum into the following week, as they were knocked out of the state sectional tournament by Millburn on Tuesday by a score of 1-0. Although the loss hit the team pretty hard, the week will not be one that Valian forgets any time soon.
