SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ - Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School received good grades in comparison to other high schools in the state, according to the newly released New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) report.

For the grade span 9-12, SP-F’s rankings were as follows:

Academic Achievement

Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School (SPF HS) meets 100% of its performance targets in the area of Academic Achievement, which measures the content knowledge students have in language arts literacy and math.  This includes measures of the school’s proficiency rate on both the Language Arts Literacy and Math sections of the New Jersey High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA).  The school outperforms 78% of the schools statewide and 65% of schools educating students of similar demographics.

College and Career Readiness

SPF HS meets 100% of its performance targets in the area of College and Career Readiness, which measures the degree to which students demonstrate behaviors that are indicative of future attendance and/or success in college and careers.  For high schools, this includes measures of participation in college readiness tests such as the SAT, ACT or PSAT and in rigorous coursework as defined by participation in AP courses in English, math, social studies and science.  SPF HS outperforms 81% of schools statewide and 76% of schools with students of similar demographics.

Graduation and Post-Secondary

SPF HS meets 100% of its performance targets in the area of Graduation and Post-Secondary, which measures the rates at which students who begin high school four years earlier graduate within four years.  Also included is a measure of the rate at which students in a particular school drop out of school.  SPF HS outperforms 83% of schools statewide, and 87% of schools educating students with similar demographics.

Performance Area                    Peer Percentile  Statewide Percentile   Percentage Targets Met

Academic Achievement                        65                                 78                        100%

College & Career Readiness              76                                 81                       100%

Graduation and Post-Secondary         87                                 83                      100%

Very High Performance is defined as being equal to or above the 80th percentile, while High Performance is defined as being between the 60th and 79.9th percentiles.  There were no areas in which Scotch Plains-Fanwood was ranked as Average, Lagging Performance or Significantly Lagging.

Peer Schools are schools that have similar grade levels and students with similar demographic characteristics, such as the percentage of students qualifying for Free/Reduced Lunch, Limited English Proficiency programs or Special Education programs.

According to Dr. Joan Mast, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction and Technology of Scotch Plains-Fanwood, the facet of the report that the district is most proud of is the areas where students are demonstrating improvement in one year to the next.  There is evidence of that on this report.

“In the areas of college and career readiness, we meet or exceed our peer group with the exception of student attendance in the elementary schools,” said Mast, who believes there is always an opportunity for continued improvement.  “The teachers and administrators will review this data to focus in on areas where growth is needed.”

Mast explained that the district has met or exceeded in 55 of the 64 annual NJDOE targets.

“We will continue to use this as a measure of growth and improvement,” added Mast.
