SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ – After playing to a scoreless tie over the first 40 minutes, the Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School girls soccer team scored two second-half goals to beat Westfield on Tuesday at SPF’s Wexler Field.

Raider forwards Katherine Cunningham and Kelly Yeager each scored in the second half to keep SPF’s undefeated (3-0) start intact.

“It really helps the girls confidence,” Raider head coach Kevin Ewing said. “The inexperience that we have plays into that. It shows the kids that they’re good.”

Cunningham’s goal was the first of her season, while Yeager now leads the team with four tallies.

While not surprised by her success, Yeager said it has taken some work getting used to playing on the offensive side of the ball.

“Last year, I would sub-in for defense. This year I took on forward for the first time for this team,” Yeager said. “It was challenging in the beginning, but I eventually clicked with the forward who have been playing for years. We took it to our advantage, using our speed and our agility and it finally clicked. That’s what has been working for us.”

Yeager connected with the rest of the Raider forwards on a header that sealed the third victory of the season.

“We are 3-0 and are proud of it,” Yeager said.

The two rivals will meet again on Oct. 8 at 3 p.m. at Gary Kehler Stadium, as part of a doubleheader with the boys’ soccer teams playing each other at 5 p.m.
