SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ -- Three Scotch Plains-Fanwood boys have won the New Jersey state finals of the Destination Imagination Tournament, a competition designed to facilitate the growth of out-of-the-box thinkers, and will compete in the Global Finals, the world’s largest celebration of creativity in technology and science.

Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School freshman Arren Puri, with partners Ryan Puri and Breton MacNeil, both from Terrill Middle School, presented their solution to the technical challenge “Dig In” to win the state competition.

Although two of the three boys are in middle school, the team was in the High School Level of the competition because Destination Imagination requires that teams compete at the level of their oldest member. The Scotch Plains-Fanwood team presented a solution that the students developed over a period of several months.  In addition, they were given only minutes to consider, solve, and implement a solution to a posed task for the Instant Challenge portion of the competition.

The Destination Imagination finals, which will take place from Weds, May 21 through Sat, May 24 in Knoxville, TN, is expected to draw more than 16,000 attendees, including 1,300 teams from 45 states, seven Canadian provinces, and 13 countries.

“I greatly enjoy the mental stimulation involved in DI, and appreciate the recognition we received for our solution to the challenge,” said Arren Puri, a Scotch Plains resident.

“I’m so happy our hard work paid off and that we will have the opportunity to experience the Global Finals in Tennessee,” added his brother, Ryan Puri

“I really enjoy thinking creatively outside-the-box.  When my friend Ryan asked me to join his DI team, I knew it would be a fun challenge,” said Breton MacNeil, who lives in Fanwood.

Destination Imagination is a non-profit, volunteer-led, international organization focused on inspiring and equipping students to become the next generation of innovators and leaders.  Its educational program highlights problem-solving and team-building skills.
