SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ - An open agenda meeting of the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Board of Education revealed the rollout of Connected Mathematics, a new math textbook for seventh- and eighth-grade students at both Park and Terrill middle schools. It will be used during the fourth marking period this year.
The new textbooks incorporate the mathematical practices of the common core, helping students make sense of problems and persevere in solving them; reason abstractly and quantitatively; use mathematical models strategically; and apply the structure of mathematical properties.
“Classroom instruction and curriculum will focus on the inquiry and investigation of mathematical ideas embedded in rich problem situations,” according to Joan Mast, the assistant superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Technology.
According to Mast, 975 books were ordered at a total cost of $76,508.25. Connected Mathematics, the new textbook replaces Impact Mathematics ©2005. Further the topic alignment will continue to allow students to complete Algebra I in eighth grade.
There will be a regular public Board of Education meeting scheduled on Thursday, Feb. 27 and will include the first educational budget discussion among the board for 2014.
