SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ – Last Friday, School One Elementary held a special assembly to launch its STAR Character Education Program for the year.
“While the concept of character education is done district wide, it is up to each school to plan their own individual program,” said School One Principal Justin Fiory. “Our staff met and decided to create a reward program where kids could be ‘caught’ doing something good and earn tickets toward prizes. We have an amazing staff here and they have put in a lot of effort to make this STAR program very successful.”
STAR is an acronym for Students Together Achieve Respect and this is the concept around which a whole year of activities has been planned.
Principal Fiory invited the cheerleading squad from the SPF High School to come and present some cheers to help reinforce the message of the new program, and teachers performed several skits to illustrate how students would be “caught doing good things.”
“Each time a student gets a ticket, they will put their name on it and it will go into the hat,” said Principal Fiory. “Each week we will pull one ticket out to determine the School One STAR Student of the Week. If as a school we collect over 1000 tickets by December, we will then reward students with an iDance assembly for the whole school.”
