SUMMIT, NJ - Downtown Summit begins the holiday season with the arrival of Santa Claus, a host of children’s activities on the Village Green, along with music, an adult hat and glove drive, and the Annual Tree Lighting on Dec. 8.

Activities begin at 2:30 p.m. on the Village Green, where World of Rock will be performing holiday favorites, Jimmy’s Artistic Creations will be designing holiday sculptures from blocks of ice, the Summit Police Athletic League will be serving hot chocolate, and a face painter will be available for the children to enjoy.

Rascal the Clown will create balloon animals, and Reeves-Reed Arboretum, the Summit First Aid Squad, and YMCA will conduct other children’s activities.

Bridges Outreach will have a table where children can color paper gift bags, and participants are invited to make a donation of an adult winter hat or pair of gloves for those in need.

At 3 p.m., Santa arrives on the rooftop of the YMCA, 67 Maple Street, across from the Village Green, and he will descend from the roof with the assistance of the Summit Fire Department and their hook and ladder truck.  Santa will proceed to the gym of the YMCA where he will be joined by his elves to greet children until 4:30 p.m. The Summit High School brass quintet, under the direction of Steve Rap, will play holiday favorites in the lobby of the YMCA.

Activities on the Village Green continue until the annual tree lighting by mayor Ellen Dickson at 4:45 p.m., along with holiday songs by the Continuo Arts Children’s Choir.

Free $10 Summit Holiday Dollar gift cards will be distributed during the festivities, courtesy of Summit Downtown, Inc. (SDI), which is sponsoring the day's events.  According to Mark Wadmond, events committee chairman for SDI,  “We are pleased to offer free Summit Holiday Dollar gift cards to shoppers for the second year in a row, as a way of saying 'Thank You' for supporting local merchants and restaurants.  The cards are valid from December 1-25 at participating businesses, which are listed on our website, www.summitdowntown.org.”
