LIVINGSTON, NJ - Sanskriti, a Livingston-based Indian school, celebrated its annual Heritage Day on Feb. 9 with the theme of "Natural Wonders."
The event featured performances from each of the school’s four culture teams, as well as activity tables, student art displays and refreshments. Students were encouraged to develop their creative potential and share what they have learned through drama, poetry, a skit game show and a PowerPoint presentation.
Heritage Day is the culmination of diverse Indian customs and traditions built around a specific theme. Past years’ themes have ranged from Indian weddings, family traditions and Indian food. The event is based around the idea that India displays Unity in Diversity with every state having its own distinct language, New Year Day, food, and traditional clothing.
“The ethos of Indian culture is best captured by the sense of ‘universal love for humanity,’ where everyone is a part of a larger reality than themselves, with the sum being greater than its parts,” said Chitra Maridi, vice-principal, Sanskriti. “This love of humanity has been the reason why India is home to so many diverse cultures and religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Jainism, Christianity, and Zoroastrianism to name a few.”
Livingston’s Sanskriti school was established in the fall of 2010 by the Indian Association Sanskriti of NJ. This Sunday school program operates out of the Horizon High School on Okner Parkway in Livingston. It offers educational opportunities for learning two distinct Indian languages and Indian culture through interactive workshops, Indian music, dance, foods, festivals, arts and crafts, religion and mythology. Students gain knowledge of Indian culture within the context of modern Indian history, politics, geography, and current events. Community Service plays a very vital role and is an integral part of the culture curriculum. Every year the school interacts with an average of 70 families from Livingston and neighboring towns.
