LIVINGSTON, NJ - Once again, the Saint Barnabas Medical Center received an "A" -- the highest score in Hospital Safety Scores, from the nation's leading experts on patient safety, The Leapfrog Group, an independent, national not-for-profit organization of employer health care purchasers. The Hospital Safety Score was compiled under the guidance of the nation's leading experts on patient safety and is designed to give the public information they can use to protect themselves and their families.
To create the The Hospital Safety Score, The Leapfrog Group used 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single score representing a hospital's overall performance in keeping patients safe from preventable harm and medical errors. The data included preventing falls, bedsores and infections, administering antibiotics before surgery, and ensuring the intensive care unit is properly staffed, among others.
The report cards awarded letter grades for 2,539 institutions in the nation, including 67 New Jersey hospitals. The scores were assigned to hospitals based on infections, injuries and medical and medication errors.
