BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - Ryan Davis, sophomore at Gov. Livingston High School, knew that golf would play a role in his future since age 11. "I really started setting goals for myself about high school and college golf at age 11 or 12," said Davis.
Davis who plays for Gov. Livingston will be defending the champion title of the Union County Tournament at Echo Lake Country Club on May 6.
He's focused on potentially playing for a great university in the near future. "I really enjoy competitive golf and practicing, which makes the whole process of getting better much easier. Motivation comes naturally to me so that is a bonus as well," said Davis.
He will enter the Union County Tournament match coming off a winning streak -- earning the champion title of the past three competitions entered: 1st Annual Paul L. Bustard Memorial Junior Invitation in Chesterfield, NJ; Architects Cup in Lopatcong, NJ; and the IMG Junior Golf Tournament at Galloping Hill Golf Club in Kenilworth, NJ.
Davis won the championship title by scoring even par in the 1st Annual Paul L. Bustard Memorial Junior Invitations that was held at the Gary Player designed Old York Country Club on April 5 - 6.
Davis and Vincent Palazzolo were co-leading the Boys 13-18 Division heading into the final round. Palazzolo birdied on the 3rd and 7th holes for a 2-shot lead through the 8th. Davis birdied the 9th and 14th which was enough to take the lead and championship over Palazzolo who bogeyed the 9th.
Davis followed up this title with the first place title of the Architects Cup on April 12-13. Davis scored under par in both rounds. His two-under-par total score of 140 won his division by three strokes.
Davis told the IJGT that his driving was key. "I hit a lot of fairways and that set me up for good approach shots," said Davis.
Davis then entered the IMG Golf Tour at Galloping Hill Golf Course on April 26-27, winning the title with a combined round of 146 which was three strokes ahead of Evan Quinn, the recent Morris County Tournament crown champion.
Davis will play in the Liberty National Junior Invitational, NJGSA qualifiers, USGA Qualifiers and AJGA Open Tournaments, as well as the Championships at Grand Cypress Resort in Orlando, FL.
"I aspire to turn pro one day, but it really depends on how my game progresses in college. I would not turn pro unless I really felt my game was ready for that next level," said Davis. His home course of Fiddler's Elbow Country Club in Bedminster, NJ, is where Davis works to improve his game by working on his swing and heavily focuses on his short game.
