Running Out Time to Find Time Capsules at James Monroe Elementary

EDISON, NJ – The delayed demolition of James Monroe Elementary may be the break needed by Grounds Facility Manager Irv Deakyne to locate the two time capsules buried on the schools grounds.

“One should be as you walk into the front entrance to the left where the flag pole was before they put it in the center of the parking lot,” said Deakyne. “The other one I believe is supposed to be behind the building that’s been there for 30 years.”

With no identifying ground marker or records to go by makes it difficult to find the time capsules before the demolition begins.

“I spent all day Thursday with a metal detector, trying to find them,” said Deakyne regarding his attempt to find the time capsules.

The time capsule marked the 50 Anniversary in 2013 and it is assumed the first time capsule was buried in 1989 on the 25 Anniversary of the school.

Demolition of James Monroe was originally scheduled to begin on April 25, but was delayed pending asbestos removal.

Anyone with knowledge of the locations of the time capsules can contact Grounds Facility Manager Irv Deakyne
