MADISON, NJ - A routine traffic stop on Valentine's Day ended up in the arrest of the driver for possession of a Colt .45 handgun.

According to Madison police, Sgt. James Cavezza and Ptl. Bart Glab were on routine patrol when they observed a Gray BMW being operated with tinted windows in the area of Green Village Road at about 12:29 a.m. Friday. Officers subsequently conducted a motor vehicle stop with the BMW on Lathrop Avenue identified the driver of the BMW as Adalberto Gonzalez-Nunez, of Elizabeth.

When officers approached Gonzalez-Nunez to gather his credentials and explain the violation, they noticed that Gonzalez-Nunez would not make eye contact with them and appeared to be "overly nervous." Gonzalez-Nunez told police he was looking for his friend’s vehicle on a nearby street to leave a rose on it for Valentine's Day.

When the policemen tried to verify where the friend lived, the driver could not provide an answer to the officers. As officers were trying to ascertain and verify the address of where his friend lived, Gonzalez-Nunez revealed that he had a Colt .45 caliber handgun in the glove compartment of his car. Officers were able to retrieve and secure the handgun.

Gonzalez-Nunez was placed under arrest and charged with Unlawful Possession of a Weapon. He was also charged with Improper Safety Glass and Failure to Display a front license plate on his vehicle.
