ROSELAND, NJ -- The Roseland Borough Council discussed the purchase of the Fernwood Property at its meeting at the Roseland Public Library Tuesday night.
At the intersection of Eagle Rock and Fernwood Avenues, the site will once again operate as a recreation area for residents of Roseland and the surrounding communities. The council passed a resolution approving the issuance of a check in the amount of $50,000 payable to a trust held by the attorney of the seller.
One of the council’s first priorities will be to refurbish the dugouts and restrooms at Fernwood’s baseball field. A resolution approving an advertising notice to potential bidders for the restoration projection also passed.
“I want to thank the members of this Council, and this government, for pulling together to make this purchase happen,” Mayor John Duthie said. “I am very proud to say that we can preserve Fernwood as a piece of Roseland.”
Duthie also discussed years of missed chances and frustrated opportunities to purchase the property.
“This took many years and many attempts,” he said.
“I’m glad this will be preserved for decades and even centuries to come. I can see our children and their children and their children continue to use [the field].”
Council member and recreation committee Thomas Tsilionis also spoke of the expanded opportunities the refurbishing of the field would bring.
“People would always ask me ‘what about a soccer field?’ and the truth was, we didn’t even have room for a regulation field.” he said. “Now, we’ll have a field where residents can play soccer or football or whatever. The land really opens up the opportunity for many new things.”
The Council approved an introduction to an ordinance which would revise the existing ordinance that prohibits all smoking at town parks and recreation areas. The Council also discussed a federal grant that would provide for the purchase of mobile generators to keep traffic lights running in the event of a power outage.
