SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- Rose Checchio, whose family has lived in the community for nearly 100 years and has a long history of contributing to the township, has joined John Del Sordi and Luisa Bianco on the 2014 Democratic ticket for Township Council.

“I’m thrilled to be running for the Scotch Plains council and to be joining two exceptionally talented candidates on this year’s Democratic ticket,” Checchio said. “This campaign must be about the people. Our elected officials are our caretakers, and I am committed to being a good one by being a good listener, making myself accessible, and working hard to address the needs of all our citizens. I look forward to a campaign that will be a civil, honest and open discussion about the issues that affect our neighbors.”

Checchio, a wife and mother of two and the co-owner of two Little Genius Academies child day-care centers, lists increasing cooperation among the council, keeping municipal taxes under control, and providing better services as her top priorities if she is elected.

“We need to have the majority on the council work together to stabilize taxes and ensure that we are spending our tax dollars wisely and cost efficiently,” said Checchio, an active member of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle Parish and the Scotch Plains JCC.

“Over the past years we’ve seen a deterioration of municipal services. We can do better picking up leaves, plowing snow, fixing potholes and maintaining township properties that have fallen into disrepair. We can do better.”

Checchio replaces candidate William Thomas, who was forced to decline the nomination due to a promotion at work.
