Revel to Host First Surfing Event This Week-end

With the crisp Ocean breeze and clean late summer waves, there's no better time to surf New Jersey than September. Revel is pleased to announce that Surfing America, the national governing body for surfing in the United States, will be holding their first Surfing America Prime East event of the 2012/2013 season at Revel Beach, Atlantic City, NJ, September 28 - 30, 2012.

Surfing America Prime is the highest level of junior surfing in the nation.  Competitors from all over the East coast with come to Revel Beach to test their skills against the best in the East to qualify for the USA Championships at Lower Trestles, San Onofre State Beach, in June, and possibly earn spot on the PacSun USA Surf Team.  Surfing America Prime events feature professional judging by Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) and International Surfing Association (ISA) certified judges, computer scoring, professional announcing and 4 person 20-minute heats. 

Competitors qualify for the Prime series on the East Coast by excelling in either National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) or Atlantic Surfing Federation (ASF) competitions the previous season. The competition will run from approximately 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM Saturday and Sunday depending on surf and tides.  The event is open to the public to watch free of charge.  In addition to the Surf Competition, PacSun USA Junior Surf Team Coach, Ryan Simmons, will be running a free coaching clinic for competitors on Friday afternoon from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM.  Also ASP Judge Gordon Lawson will hold a short judging clinic on Saturday morning at 7:30 AM. 

All events will take place on Revel Beach. "We are super stoked to have Revel host our event in Atlantic City," said Surfing America Executive Director, Greg Cruse.  "The resort is amazing and combined with the wide sandy Revel Beach, we couldn't ask for a better venue for our event." During the event on Saturday, AC Surf Schools will be hosting free surf lessons for Boys and Girls Club of Atlantic City members.  PacSun USA Surf Team members and Surfing America Prime Surfers will be lending a hand as guest instructors. competition standards, hosting national championship events, and selecting and fielding the official United States Surf Team to compete internationally. http://www.surfingamerica.org

Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa culminated its record-setting poker tournament series with one of the largest fields and toughest final tables in its decade-long history, as Ben Hamnett became the newest Borgata Poker Open champion.

Hamnett, a professional from Pittsburgh, PA, defeated amateur Matthew Burnitz (Bear, DE) heads-up to collect $818,847 in prize money and place his name alongside such prestigious past Borgata Poker Open champions as Bobby Oboodi (2011), Dwyte Pilgrim (2010), Olivier Busquet (2009), Vivek Rajkumar (2008), Roy Winston (2007), Mark Newhouse (2006), Al Ardebili (2005), Daniel Negreanu (2004) and Noli Francisco (2003).

Hamnett’s consistent and controlled play helped him put his name in the history books and take home the coveted World Poker Tour® trophy.  “A lot of people play with blind aggression and you know if you get in a hand with them, one of you is going to go broke,” stated Hamnett immediately after soaking in the victory.  “[I didn’t] play like that.”

Borgata celebrated its decade-long poker series in record-breaking fashion with an unbelievably successful opening event. The $1 Million Guaranteed Deep Stack No Limit Hold’em tournament experienced the largest attendance in the history of East Coast poker with a staggering 3,705 participants generating $1,852,500 in prize money.

This year’s WPT® Borgata Poker Open extended its streak to four consecutive 1,000+ Championship event fields, attracting amateurs and professional players, including Gavin Smith, Will “The Thrill” Failla, Jonathan Little, Tommy Vedes, Matt Salsberg, Andy Frankenberger, Allen Cunningham, Tony Dunst, Lee Childs, Vinny Pahuja, Todd Terry, and Barry Greenstein. Other notable names included past Borgata Poker Open winners Bobby Oboodi, Dwyte Pilgrim and Olivier Busquet.

The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey will host the 9th Annual Fannie Lou Hamer Human and Civil Rights Symposium on Tuesday, October 9, beginning at 2:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center here on campus.

“The theme of this year’s symposium is ‘Erasing the Double Standard: Enduring Social Obstacles to Equality and Social Justice,’ said Distinguished Professor of Social Work and Africana Studies, Pat Reid-Merritt.  “This continues our tradition of bringing informative educational programs to the College and the wider community.” 

Keynote speaker is scholar, journalist, and economist Dr. Julianne Malveaux, President Emeritus of Bennett College. Guest panelists include Stockton faculty members Dr. Deb Figart, Director of the Stockton Center for Economic and Financial Literacy; Dr. Janice Joseph, Distinguished Professor of Criminal Justice, and Dr. Michael Rodriguez, Associate Professor of Criminal Justice.

There will also be Freedom Songs presented by the Highest Praise Choir and dramatist Ms. Lenny Daniels will re-create a dramatic scene based on the life of Fannie Lou Hamer, a civil rights pioneer who testified on behalf of voting rights and civil rights at the 1964 Democratic National Convention in Atlantic City.

This annual Professionals Committee event will feature an evening of networking, food and fun. Food will be provided by several of Haddonfield eateries, including: The Little Tuna, The Apron, The British Chip Shop, Ludovicos, Dream Puffz and da Soli, along with wines from Andreotti’s Viennese Café, courtesy of Fulton Bank.
