Republican Committee Response On Nomination Of Bob Woodruff As Candidate for Mayor

To the Editor,

As Chairman and at the urging of my fellow members of the Berkeley Heights Republican Municipal Committee, I felt compelled to address the comments made by Joe Bruno in the recent story appearing in The Independent Press regarding the Republican Committee’s nomination of a candidate for Mayor of Berkeley Heights.  The Committee is made up of hardworking, dedicated volunteers who, like all volunteers, work diligently for the improvement of their community. The process of selecting a candidate for Mayor is a serious one that takes significant time and consideration.  The goal of the Committee is to select the best possible candidate for the important leadership role of Mayor.  For Mr. Bruno to characterize this process as one based on friends choosing “their friend” is demeaning to the process and disrespectful to the individual volunteers involved.  His telling the public that he gave the Committee his “spiel” indicates a lack of vision in how to address the real challenges facing our town.  Mr. Bruno surmising that this group of individuals did not hear his “spiel” or came to their decision based on one issue during his tenure as Mayor is inaccurate.

The Committee’s unanimous selection of former Mayor and current Councilman Robert Woodruff as its Nominee was welcomed by an enthusiastic response of township residents and community members and the immediate endorsement of all of his fellow Council members along with that of our state Representatives: State Senate Minority Leader Tom Kean, Jr., State Assembly Minority Leader Jon Bramnick, and State Assembly Representative Nancy Munoz. A lifelong resident of Union County and 27 year resident of Berkeley Heights, Bob Woodruff has the experience and expertise to lead our town with a collaborative style and commitment to partnerships with the Township Council and the community at large. He has the skills and energy to reach beyond his Party and work with all people regardless of political affiliation.

My thanks to Mr. Woodruff for his acceptance of the nomination, and to all the members of the Committee and volunteers in our community who work so hard for the continued growth and prosperity of Berkeley Heights.

David Ronner
Chairman, Berkeley Heights Republican Municipal Committee
