Renowned Matt King Quartet to Perform at Caldwell College

CALDWELL, NJ - As part of its Concert Series, the Caldwell College Department of Music will present the Matt King Quartet featuring King’s eclectic original work, works by jazz masters such as Thelonious Monk and standards from the Great American Songbook. The quartet will perform on Thursday, March 21, at 8pm in the Alumni Theatre. 

According to his website, King has garnered numerous awards for his playing, composing, and arranging. Matt was a Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition semi-finalist, and the winner of the Great American Jazz Piano Competition in 2000.

King has performed with many renowned jazz artists including Chris Potter, Rufus Reid, Billy Hart, Vic Juris, and Joe Morello; noted Brasilian musicians Nilson Matta and Claudio Roditi; iconic groups such as Blood, Sweat & Tears and The Shirelles; pop vocalists Phoebe Snow and Curtis Stigers; blues great Earl King, bluegrass master Tony Trischka, and many other artists across a broad stylistic spectrum.

He has performed with four symphony orchestras in the US, appeared on The Today Show and Good Morning America, played Holland’s renowned North Sea Jazz Festival, the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, the Vermont Mozart Festival, and at numerous other venues throughout the US and 18 other countries.

King's jazz quartet features Caldwell College professor Rob Middleton on reeds. Middleton is a prize-winning composer and a seasoned saxophonist who has performed with many jazz greats, including Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Phil Woods, Harry Connick Jr., Lionel Hampton, The New York Voices, Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Lovano, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Woody Shaw, Oliver Lake, David Liebman, Randy Brecker, John Faddis, Joe Williams, George Coleman, Jimmy Cobb and has recorded with Lionel Hampton and others. His performance career has taken him to major jazz clubs and festivals in this country and abroad.
