LIVINGSTON, NJ - School is almost over and summer is just around the corner. In fact, there are only 31 more days until most summer camps begin. Many local children will soon be off to camp, with registrations completed, while some parents are still weighing their options. And, others are already starting to plan for summer 2015.

There are so many summer camp options to choose from that there are options to fit almost everyone’s needs. There are traditional day and sleep away camps, town-run programs, sports and arts camps, and summer camp enrichment programs—just to name a few.

In addition, there are full-day, full-summer, weekly, and even pay-by-the day camps out there. And often, parents have to options to drop their children off or bus them, and to even send them on day trips and short sleepover trips.

Regardless as to where children go for the summer, one thing that is true for most parents is that there are now many more options to choose from than there were available when many of today’s parents went to camp.

Below are a few of the many programs available this summer:

Meadowbrook Country Day Camp, is an American Camp Association (ACA) accredited day camp, which is located on a beautiful 50-acre setting in Long Valley, just outside of Chester. Meadowbrook’s traditional day camp program services children ages 3-14.

The camp provides door-to-door transportation on air-conditioned mini-buses to Morris County and parts of Essex, Union, Sussex, Warren, Hunterdon, Middlesex, and Somerset counties. The camp also offers extended hours from 7:30 a.m. – 6 p.m.

In addition, Meadowbrook offers a very wide selection of athletics, creative arts, nature, and special events as well as climbing wall and high and low ropes courses complete with a 30-foot tall zip line. Swim instruction is offered every morning and general/free swim every afternoon in a 9,000 square-foot pool complex featuring three heated pools.

One thing that is unique to Meadowbrook is that all tips are included in tuition so there are no extra costs later. And, Meadowbrook provides lunch each day for campers.

“This will be my girls’ fifth year at Meadowbrook,” said Debbie ‘Mack’ Glucksman, a 1986 LHS graduate. “They have made amazing friends that they see outside of camp. They love mountain boarding, archery, bumper boats, chocolate [an edible art activity], cooking and arts and crafts—just to name a few of their favorite activities. They also love the staff and feel like part of the Meadowbrook family. In addition, my older daughter loves it so much that she is now going back to be a counselor.”

According to owners Jed and Roz Buck, “Meadowbrook’s goal is to create the best possible camp environment in which children can thrive. Meadowbrook is a place where children have the opportunity to try new activities, take on new challenges, increase their self-esteem and grow in a safe, nurturing, fun environment. This is accomplished through a dynamic and creative program organized by a warm and caring professional staff.”

Not all children desire a traditional day camp experience. Some may enjoy attending different types of programs each week like weekly sports camps, arts camps, or enrichment programs.

For these children, the International Ivy Summer Enrichment Program, may be just what they are looking for. Right now, International Ivy is having a five-day flash sale at its Caldwell College, 120 Bloomfield Avenue, Caldwell location, from May 29 to June 2. International Ivy also offers programs in other locations including: The Pingry School in Short Hills, Chatham Day School in Chatham, Wardlaw-Hartridge School in Edison, Far Hills Country Day School in Far Hills, and Rutgers Preparatory School in Somerset. Classes may vary per location.

International Ivy provides children with access to creative and intellectually-stimulating programs during the summer, regardless of whether they are deemed gifted or not. All children are welcome.

“Summer is a great time to explore, meander, create and lose oneself in doing something fun,” said owner of International Ivy Lily Wong. “We create classes based on what kids would love to learn like video game creation, robotics, minecraft, performing arts, and weird science, etc. We design the classes to be hands-on where kids learn by doing. There are plenty of choices across many disciplines so kids explore what they are interested in. Our ultimate goal is to help our students find their passion. Once they find it, they are self-motivated to learn and explore further.”

“Kids love International Ivy because we strike the balance between learning and playing,” said Wong. “Our kids learn by doing, experimenting and exploring. Parents love our flexible scheduling. All our sessions are weekly so parents can sign up one or more weeks. Parents can also choose full-day (9:00-5:00) or half-day (9:00-12:30 or 1:30-5:00).”

The Caldwell Location offers programs for children ages 7-14 from June 30 - August 15, weekly sessions, full-day or half-day sessions, and attendees can pick their own classes.

The grants are available to children ages 7-17, regardless of income, and can be used toward any of 150-plus Jewish camps, ranging from sports specialty camps, outdoor adventure, teen programs, camps for children with special needs, as well as traditional sleep-away camps.

The grants are provided through One Happy Camper NJ, a program of The Partnership for Jewish Learning and Life that also offers free, personalized assistance to local families in selecting the right camp for their child.

“One Happy Camper is dedicated to increasing Jewish camp awareness and enrollment from the local area,” said Tracy Levine, of One Happy Camper.
