NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - New Providence Middle School Peer leaders assisted the New Providence Municipal Alliance in kicking off the 2013 Red Ribbon Week on Friday. The students accepted a Proclamation from Mayor J. Brooke Hern and hung red ribbons on all light poles in the business district and at all local schools.

Red Ribbon Week, which runs from Oct. 23-31, is a National Drug Awareness campaign that commemorates the life of DEA Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, who was murdered by a drug cartel while working undercover in Mexico in 1985. Following his death, the public outpouring of supprt in Camarena's hometown of Calexico, Cal., turned into an organized community response in which citizens donned red ribbons.

The ribbons became a symbol for prevention and educational efforts to reduce the demand for illegal drugs and illegal use of legal drugs in America. In 1988, Red Ribbon Week was recognized nationally with President Ronald and First Lady Nancy Reagan serving as the Honorary Chairs.

The New Providence Alliance and New Providence schools join together each year during this week to conduct programs to heighten children’s awareness of the dangers of drug abuse.
