NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - The Rahway girls’ soccer team defeated New Providence, 2-1, in the first round of the Union County Tournament on Saturday at Lieder Field.
After a scoreless first half, the second half proved to be a more exciting one, but an emotional rollercoaster for both the Pioneers and the Indians at the same time.
In the 54th minute, Indians’ midfielder Catalina Lozano managed to put one in the back of the net, giving Rahway a one-goal lead.
With the Pioneers pressing hard in their offensive third, NP defender Anna Crisafi crossed the ball into a mass in front of the goal for fellow defender Ashley Evangelos to head it in and tie the game up.
Just minutes before the final whistle, Lozano scored once more, rocketing the ball into the net, sending the Rahway crowd into a frenzy.
Despite the final Pioneer attempt to tie the game again, they failed to put any shots in the goal, ending their UCT run after one game.
“Obviously the result is not what we wanted, but we will take it as a learning experience,” New Providence senior Casey Trezza said. “It was definitely disappointing, but we will take the positives and grow from it.”
The Pioneers return to action on Tuesday when they host Gov. Livingston at 4 p.m.
