The Jewish Holiday of Purim will be celebrated with a family-friendly Purim Party Brunch to be held at Brooklake Country Club (139 Brooklake Rd. in Florham Park) on Sunday February 24th at 11am. The celebration will include an 11am reading of the “Megillah”, a scroll describing the story of Purim, with a simultaneous holiday slide show, followed by a Purim Brunch at 11:30am featuring lively music, live entertainment, and a parade and prizes for all children.

Everyone is welcome to attend in costume, as is customary on Purim. A suggested donation of $15 for adults and $5 for children is requested, and Purim Party Sponsorships are available for $100. College students are welcome at no charge.

Purim,” The Festival of Lots” commemorates the salvation of the Jewish People from the evil tyrant Haman in ancient Persia in the year 356 B.C.E. This riveting yet true epic of palace intrigue took place under the rule of King Achashverosh (Xerxes). The Jewish People, led by the heroes of the holiday, Mordechai and Esther, overcame the evil Haman and triumphed because of their active unity and commitment s to their identity as a practicing Jewish community.

Traditional customs on Purim include the reading of the Megillah, giving charity to the poor, giving gifts of food to friends and family, and eating a festive meal. Traditional Purim food include “hamantashen”, a three cornered cookie with filling said to resemble the hat worn by the evil Haman.

“Purim is a fun holiday. We dress up, we commemorate our traditions, and we celebrate with friends. Our party will be geared both to adults and children, and I’m looking forward to a really exciting evening! ”, said Rabbi Shalom Lubin, who is organizing the Purim celebration.

Chabad of SE Morris County will also be running Purim programs at local nursing homes and assisted living facilities, bringing joy to the elderly in the spirit of the holiday.
