Priority: Safety of Public by Maintaining Clear Roadways

Friday, February 7, 2014 • 6:25pm

The recent snow events provide an opportunity to explain the City’s snow removal procedures - the City’s priority is to assure the safety of the public by maintaining clear roadways.

In advance of a predicted winter storm, our DPW crews apply a brine solution to the roadways to improve snow removal.  Once the snow begins, salt is applied to the roads to further enhance the snow removal – some 90 tons of salt are spread on Summit’s roadways during a typical storm.  Twelve plows are deployed on six separate routes throughout the City when the snow reaches two inches. The main arteries are cleared first followed by secondary roadways.  The works continues until snow is removed to the curb line.

During heavy snowstorms, our snowplows need to make several passes.  That process can deposit accumulated snow in front of driveways and onto sidewalks. While having to repeatedly shovel out driveways is an understandable hardship for residents.

Significant storms – like the one that occurred this week – require continuing effort by our DPW.  Tonight, crews will be removing accumulated snow from throughout our downtown.

Thank you for your patience as we continue to work through a difficult winter.

Sincerely,

Christopher J. Cotter
City Administrator
