MILLBURN, NJ - To combat the growing problem of prescription and over-the-counter medication abuse, the Millburn Municipal Alliance Committee (MMAC), the Millburn Police Department, and the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Team (ADAPT) have collaborated to install a prescription drug drop-box in the lobby of the Millburn Police Department.

The permanent box, which was decorated by a Millburn High School senior, will be accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Residents can now safely and anonymously drop off unneeded prescription and over-the-counter medications.

Under the supervision of a qualified doctor, medicine can be used to cure anything from a migraine to foot pain. But this Dr. Jekyll can become a Mr. Hyde if used improperly. Children, adolescents and seniors who use prescription medications accidentally or for non-medical purposes may incur serious and even fatal side-effects.

According to the CDC, emergency room visits due to prescription drug abuse or misuse have doubled in the past five years, and now total nearly half a million. The CDC also reports about 12 million Americans, especially teens and adults, misuse prescription painkillers for nonmedical reasons. More than $72.5 billion each year goes to the medical costs incurred by prescription drug abuse and misuse.

ADAPT and MMAC urge families to take inventory of the prescription and over-the-counter medication in their households and dispose of any old or uneeded medications.
