WESTFIELD, NJ--Several agencies are assisting the Westfield Police Department in a search for a 17-year-old boy who fled his school bus into the nearby woods this morning.
“At about 11 o’clock this morning, a juvenile attending school at the Lamberts Mill Academy on Lamberts Mill Road fled off of the school bus that was transporting him into the wooded area,” Westfield Police Chief David Wayman told TAP. “Circumstances surrounding his leaving are not clear right now. Because of the large area—there are no roadways and it’s such a difficult area to navigate—we’re using all-terrain vehicles. A boat is searching the waterways."
The Westfield PD is being assisted by Clark, Scotch Plains, Fanwood, Union County, and state police agencies, as well as the Union County Office of Emergency Management and a National Guard helicopter.
If the youth is not found in the next few hours “We’re going to continue into the nighttime hours and then we’ll reevaluate our searching methods,” Wayman said.
Lamberts Mill Academy is an educational program designed for students who require a comprehensive psycho-therapeutic approach in an educational setting.
