SOUTH ORANGE, N.J., -- An 18-year-old Newark resident was arrested by South Orange police Wednesday after losing control of the vehicle he was driving during a police chase and crashing into a South Orange Avenue storefront, according to police.

At about 1:30 a.m., Robert Lilly sideswiped an officer’s vehicle in attempt to force the officer off the road as Lilly was being pursued down Academy Street north toward South Orange Avenue.

On South Orange Avenue, Lilly lost control of his vehicle and struck a storefront. He then fled on foot for approximately two blocks before being caught by South Orange police.

The pursuit began after a resident witnessed him attempting to enter parked vehicles on Prospect Street. The witness called South Orange Police and informed them that Lilly was leaving the area in a white BMW.

The BMW that Lilly had been driving was reported to be a stolen vehicle out of Newark.

Lilly was taken to South Orange police headquarters and charged with eluding, resisting arrest, aggravated assault on a police officer, unlawful possession of a weapon, unlawful possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, receiving stolen property and several motor vehicle violations.
