PLAINFIELD, NJ - A Plainfield resident has been arrested and charged with murder and related weapons offenses in connection with a fatal shooting that took place last week following a verbal dispute over a game of dice, acting Union County Prosecutor Grace H. Park announced Friday.

Johnathan Sylvester, 28, is being held on $1 million bail in connection with the death of 24-year-old Rashawn Bryant of Myrtle Avenue in Plainfield. Bryant is expected to have his first court appearance in the coming days.

It was approximately 5:15 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 22 when Bryant and several friends were rolling dice in front of a home on the 300 block of Evona Avenue in Plainfield, according to a joint investigation by the Union County Homicide Task Force and the Plainfield Police Division. Following an argument over the game, Sylvester produced a handgun and allegedly fired several shots at Bryant.

Bryant was struck by gunfire and was transported via medical helicopter to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 1 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23.

This investigation remains active, and anyone with additional information is being urged to contact Prosecutor’s Office Sgt. Joe Vendas at (908) 358-3048 or Detective Brendan Sullivan at 908-966-0999.

Convictions on murder charges typically result in sentences of 30 years to life in state prison.

These criminal charges are mere accusations. Each defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
