A Pennsylvania man was arrested late in the afternoon on March 2nd after he was observed driving erratically through the Sparta Post Office parking lot. At 2:40 in the afternoon, Sgt. Jeffrey Mase was on routine patrol when he was stopped at the traffic signal at the intersection of Woodport Road, Sparta Avenue and Main Street.
As the sergeant waited in traffic, he observed a 2003 silver Ford Escape also stopped several vehicles ahead of him. The Ford attempted to first make an illegal left hand turn onto Sparta Avenue but when other cars behind him began sounding their horns he continued straight turning left into the Post Office Parking lot.
The operator of the Ford disregarded a “Do Not Enter Sign” traveling the wrong way through the lot and then began aimlessly cutting in and out of parked vehicles before he was stopped. The operator later identified as, 32-year-old Daniel Cardell of Clifton Heights in Pennsylvania could not give the sergeant any coherent explanation as to the reason for his erratic operation of his vehicle.
After failing a series of Field Sobriety Tests, he was placed under arrest for DWI and transported to police headquarters for breath testing and processing. After submitting to breath testing his blood alcohol level was found to be more than four times the legal limit. Cardell was charged with; DWI and Careless Driving. Cardell was released several hours later to a sober adult. His vehicle was impounded. Cpl. Marc Rubino assisted with the investigation.
