BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - Horseshoe Pond fishin' hole was officially open on Saturday, and the day's sunny, warm skies reeled in a crowd of young kids and parents for the annual Berkeley Heights PBA Youth Fishing Derby.

The derby is an annual tradition in early spring --  the Berkeley Heights Police PBA local #144 organizes the event for the youth of Berkeley Heights to have the opportunity to fish.  "We encourage the day to be about the kids," said lead organizer Ptl. Donato Minicozzi. All children upto grade eight are invited to attend.

The PBA organizers stock the spring fed pond with 300 fish including trout. The PBA supplies bait and extra poles and are available to assist the kids and teach them how to fish.

"There are two prizes, first overall fish caught and one for the biggest fish.  The first fish caught was by Luke Stallone," said PBA Delegate, Detective Pat Moran.

Luke is the son of PBA President, Detective Mark Stallone. "I used to come here as a kid, I took this [Fishing Derby} over 22 years ago and just this year handed it off to Donato," said Stallone.

The Berkeley Heights PBA 144 also organizes an Annual Trunk or Treat event for Halloween and will be holding their Annual John Stamler Golf Invitational on June 23 at Oak Hill Golf Club. Visit bhpba.com for more information.
