PATERSON, NJ – The streets of Paterson might be about to become a little bit safer.

Mayor Jose Torres’ stated commitment to broadening the city’s police department will include the commissioning of 26 new police officers to the department next week to improve services while establishing new crime-fighting and community-based problem solving initiatives.

The 26 men and women of law enforcement join the 17 other new officers who graduated the police academy on June 26 to bring this year’s total of new officers to 43.

“This is a great day for the City of Paterson and for our police department,” Police Director Jerry Speziale said. “Mayor Torres and I will continue to make every effort to strengthen not only the ranks of the department but our relationship with the community and our commitment to the safety and security of all who live, work and visit our City.” Police Director Jerry Speziale

Ten of the newly instated officers will be funded at no cost to Paterson through the Universal COPS Hiring Grant. Speziale has also applied for additional grant monies to fund an additional 15 officers. If approved, they will join the police force in early 2015.
