Paterson Restoration Corporation Sponsors Disaster Recovery Lunchbox Series on July 25th – How to Emerge from the Storm with your Business Intact – Presented by the Small Business Development Center at William Paterson University

How prepared is your business in the event of a disaster? A Business Lunchbox Series sponsored by the Paterson Restoration Corporation on Thursday, July 25, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at The Hamilton Club located at 32 Church Street in Paterson will address the importance of developing a disaster recovery and business continuity plan.

Kate Muldoon, Regional Director of the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at William Paterson University, says communities in Passaic County such as Paterson, have been severely impacted by weather-related disasters such as flooding over the years. “Superstorm Sandy was an unparalleled catastrophe, but the aftermath was even worse for businesses in parts of Passaic County and the Atlantic Coast, that were still recovering from Hurricane Irene when Superstorm Sandy hit,” says Muldoon.

Muldoon wants businesses in Passaic County to know that she and her team at the SBDC are on call to assist business with their planning and continuity needs.

Errol Bowen, a senior consultant with the SBDC at William Paterson University, will be discussing pre-disaster planning and basic steps business owners can take to protect their assets and respond effectively to potential disruptions to business operations.

 “There are many factors that contribute to the disruption of business services – we will take a look at the various threats to business operations, the severity of these threats and the steps businesses can take to plan ahead and mitigate the damages and losses,” says Bowen, a certified public account and business management consultant for the SBDC at William Paterson University.

The National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), the nation's scorekeeper on addressing severe weather/climate events, reports that Superstorm Sandy caused $65 billion in damages in 2012. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), 40 percent of businesses that suffer a disaster never recover.

To help businesses recover and plan for the future, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) recently awarded the New Jersey Small Business Development Centers (NJSBDC) network a grant to assist businesses following Superstorm Sandy. In addition to Mr. Bowen’s presentation, Ms. Muldoon will also be discussing the services provided by the NJSBDC network that businesses can access to help them develop a disaster plan post Sandy at no cost.
