PATERSON, N.J. – The Board of Education has resumed operational control of the Paterson public school system.

In a unanimous vote today in Trenton, the New Jersey State Board of Education voted to approve a transition plan to return the school operation to the Paterson Public School District.

Acting Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Education David Hespe will work with the district administration to create a transition plan that would return control of the schools to the Board of Education.

“This is a significant day for our city and for the children of Paterson; and I would like to recognize all of our previous board members who worked extremely hard to reach this critical milestone – a truly positive step towards returning full local control to our district,” Paterson’s School Board President Christopher Irving said.

The news comes on the heels of the Paterson Public School District learning the latest placement scores for the Quality Single Accountability Continuum that were reviewed by the New Jersey Department of Education.

The district is reviewed in five areas deemed critical for educational success: Instruction and Program, Fiscal Management, Governance, Operations, and Personnel. For the 2014 review, the district achieved 80 percent or higher in two of the five district performance review areas, a large improvement from 2007 when they achieved only one area higher than 70 percent.

“This district has a vision to be a leader in urban education, and this includes having highly efficient and responsive operations,” Paterson’s District Superintendent Dr. Donnie Evans said. “To reach an operational level whereby the state is now granting the return of local control for this area is indeed great recognition for our board and our district.”
